Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Her first singing gig was in the choir at her church The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when she was a child at the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khan's hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. Jermaine, her mother and Lou Rawls were a few of the performers she performed with. The singer was also as a model for Seventeen Magazine in 1981. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album of a debut artist. The album had several smash singles, such as Saving all My Love for You How Are You Going to Know If You're Good to Love? and The Greater Love of All. This helped her achieve seven US number one hits consecutively. It was even better than the Beatles. Album sold in US 3,000,000 copies before it increased to 25 million globally. It gave her the first of her six Grammy Awards. Whitney was her first album. Whitney, released in 1987 and featuring the smash tracks Where Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, built upon her previous success. It was The Bodyguard (1996) that established her as one of music's best sellers. The Bodyguard's performance as a film as well as its soundtrack weren't well-received however, her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You and the accompanying album topped charts across the world for several months.
