Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is a rapper and actress. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah, the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was born and raised in Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was raised within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was given by her cousin at the age of she was just eight years old. Latifah has always been large, at 5'10", she was the power forward of her high-school basketball team. The song she sang was Home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and made a deal with Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first single Wrath of My Madness.
